I was watching Requiem for a Dream, a hipster movie, having a jolly good chuckle and all, but then it hit me. I hated it.
I won't lie, I'm on the Donnie Darko and Fight Club cult-hit bandwagon, but goddamn Requiem for a Dream is a speckle in the eye of its ambitions.
Rife with a pretentious air about it, a lack of faith in the viewer and poor emotional captivation Requiem is more than capable of filling my yearly quota of piss sour movies.
Shit, my fucking dog could take a better handheld shot than that* , and he doesn't even have damn opposable thumbs.
Watch the first 6 seconds of this and think about it. What was going through the edioter's, my new word for idiot editors, head that day? He musta had some dank ass weed, been puffin' on dat shit yo.
"Well...I need to make sure this doesn't look too Hollywood...This has gotta be 'hip', institutions are stupid!"
And forth comes a slick, seemless sequence that captivates impressionable viewers thinking it's 'hella cool' to go get a lighter and a spoon, a syringe, etc,. Whatever you need to float your boat...or sink your submarine.

McCabe & Mrs. Miller is considered by many a critic to be the hall mark of neutral colored shots with various other movies basing their style on the film. Away from its cinematic acclaim, it also embodies the semi-Nuevo ‘Anti-Western’ sub-genre though still containing many Western mannerisms. The movie’s basic structure is akin to that of many other Westerns, a hero, saloons, a woman, needless violence and, arguably, the most important aspect, gun fights.
Neutral colors are often referred to as Earth tones. They are generally whites, black, grey, browns and occasionally beige. The landscape, located in British Colombia, is, described by David Loftus, an independent film critic, as, “wet, foggy and snowy,” falls firmly into the earthy, neutral colour selection.
Roger Ebert, a journalist for the Sunday Times, wrote that, “people are always coming in…shaking the rain from their hats, and we see the trees whipping in the wind through the windows…But it's a wet autumn and then a cold winter, so people naturally congregate in saloons,” describing the climate that molds itself as the characters’ depth is revealed.
Anti-Westerns’ definition is derived from its own name, anti-western. The sub-genre began after WWII and started to question traditional Westerns, using mayhem and practicality to disagree with conventional motifs. The use of an anti-hero is frequent, stronger roles for women, criticizing big business and the government and greater empathy for Mexican-Americans and Native-Americans.
Though encompassed in this category, McCabe & Mrs. Miller is not true to it altogether. The whole objective of the characters McCabe and Mrs. Miller is to get rich, no matter in what way. This turns them into hypocrites because what they eventually end up fighting is what would be their ultimate goal.
Specifically outlined by McCabe &Mrs. Miller, the Anti-Western, or Revisionist Western, is truly about ideas and ideals, not literal content. These two types of Westerns rest on each other yet are distant. The true combination point is when a movie can encompass the ideals of the Revisionist Western yet still thematically have typical Western effects such as gun fights, whores, violence and depravity.
We, as humans, give connotations to things without much thought, a bias. In the same manner as the soliloquy in the South regarding Coke as all sodas, Westerns have many a theme that are the first things to come to our heads when we hear the word. Cowboys, boots, horses, dust, desert, guns, money, spurs, swinging doors, trains, explosives, banks and violence are just the tip of the list, our brain has a firm image of what we want a Western to be, what we know it to be. McCabe &Mrs. Miller, while using these subconscious guiderails, breaks the metaphorical fourth wall, making the audience revel in the fact that the movie is indeed an unconventional yet extremely effective Western.

We're all in a
Procrastination.
I forgot to mention that all of last night's post was made without the use of a mouse, I floated my own boat, Kudos a moi.
Two papers due tommorow and I'm getting the feeling of being falsely 'inspired' by some passing fad that I'm using to fix my anti-homework mood. Oh well, learning French on a dime seems do able, right? Or Accordian? Not a problem.
Then again, passing my sophomore year sounds pretty nice also, just a little bit nicer than learning that French...the accordian not so much.
My favorite passage of words has to be 'not entirely dissimilar..'
I think it's just so eloquent! But I'd understand if you, my non-existant reader, didn't agree with me.
Am I am an example of a calculated birth? A star chart for clowns? I'm not!

I love
Lindsay Johnson. [and if you read this blog, I love you too, just not as much as LindsAy]
Just putting that out there.
Bon Iver is really lovely. I saw a flow chart on how 'indie' (i hate that term) bands get their names and it was pretty spot on.
Worldly names:
Bon Iver (hah)
Brazillian Girls
Viva Voce
"The" + adjective + noun:
The New Pornographers
The Flaming Lips
The Ladybug Transistor
______________________
If I had to use those two to make band names for my kick ass, deep, meaningful, slightly condescending feelings the outcome could be:
The Hollow Rictor [like the scale..]
The Ethereal Cancoon
The Hyphy Crackers
and the other three would be--
Oyuni del Mar
Flemish Caps [Perfect Storm, oh man]
Cambodia
Yeah, I'd be a kickass-hardcore MoFokin' indie rocker. I'd play songs that relished in the spoiled anguish of Americans today. I'd write a song, but that'd take a hellalong time so I'll be creative with the titles...
Album:
Alamony
Tracks-
1. Temptations
2. High Top Fade
3. Cornerstore Love
4. Fishin for hands
5. Where do we Fly
5. Inconsistant Lullaby
6. Hop on the train with me
7. Stroke the Setup, Bby.
With all this fever in my mind, I could drown in your care rosy eyes
Sweedes, what a group.
